Golden Ager Marathon: When you turn 50 you feel like an old man, just like that. While we know “age is just a number” there was something about the Big 5-0 that felt a bit different. Put bluntly, it feels like that after 50 we are on the downhill side of life. So, after being depressed about this realization for a little bit, we began to noodle around with thoughts of what in our life gives us the pleasure and how we can take those things and find ways to maintain or enhance them in this stage of life. And, of course, running is very close to the top of senior’s list. It is certainly one of the most pleasurable parts of our daily existence and so, as both a runner and a running coach, you began to reflect on what things are most important to the aging runner. And, in the process it’s inevitable. At some point, you’ll realize you can’t run a sub-20 minute 5K anymore.

In fact, it may be a struggle to run a sub-30. And guess what, that’s just fine! Rather than being demoralized by the phenomenon of slowing down with age, either live in the moment and be content with the runner you are now, or flip that comparison on its head and be proud of your experience and all the things you know now that you didn’t know then.


Work hard for what you want because it won't come to you without a fight. You have to be strong and courageous and know that you can do anything you put your mind to. If somebody puts you down or criticizes you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it into something positive.
